God’s blessing through sinners

Posted on November 1, 2019November 4, 2019 by Norm

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: Genesis 25-27

What do you sense the Lord saying to you in this passage?

“I blessed him — and indeed he will be blessed!” (Genesis 27:33)
The blessing of Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3) is at the heart of this book.
In fact, the whole bible shows how God blesses unworthy people.
The ‘heroes’ of the bible are not better than others, they are ordinary sinners.
Abraham lies about his wife, Isaac does too; Jacob tricks his father, his sons do the same.
And yet God’s blessing still flows, we still are blessed beyond our deserving.
“He does not treat us as our sins deserve…” (Psalm 103:10)
God doesn’t bless sin; He resists sin and works to convict and convert sinners.
But just because we sin, it does not mean we lose the blessing.
There is always grace, there is always hope for the worst of sinners.
God has blessed us – deceivers that we are – and indeed we will be blessed.
But our experience of that blessing is less or more, depending on how we respond.
Do I live ungraciously, do I make foolish choices, am I a selfish deceiver?
Do the people who know or meet me experience grace, are they blessed by me?
God wants to extend His blessing TO me, but also THROUGH me… will I cooperate?
PRAYER
Lord, though I do not deserve it, I see Your hand of blessing in my life. Forgive me for complicating my enjoyment of Your grace by my foolish choices.

Do I have the same desire for God’s blessing -as Isaac’s children, even others outside the covenant – even to manipulate and cheat for it? Or like the hidden treasure in a field – to sell everything and buy the field from the unsuspecting landowner? Do I realize my role as a Jesus follower – to be ‘salt’ and ‘leaven’ in the society that I find myself interacting with – that I am to be a source of blessing – enough to prevent the condemnation of a city (Sodom and Gomorrah). To be that precious treasure that gem – held in me a mere cracked jar of clay? How special aren’t we? Help me not to be so anxious, Lord – but enable me to be a blessing!

think about it!

Nathaniel Hawthorne described happiness as a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you sit down quietly, may alight upon you. And it’s like that with the Spirit of God. He is not seized. He is received.
