Honest, humble faith

Posted on June 28, 2017June 27, 2017 by Norm

THE STORY OF JESUS: Mark 9:30-32
“They did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him.” (Mark 9:32)
It would have been intimidating to talk with Jesus.
He was so wise, so good, so perceptive… and yet sometimes so confusing.
What Jesus says about God’s messiah goes against what the Jews believed.
Peter had recently rebuked Jesus for saying this (Mark 8:32-33).
Now the disciples are afraid to question Him, but they still don’t get it.
Today’s reading reminds us how it is possible to misunderstand Jesus.
Sometimes we act so confident in what we know (or think we know).
We think our version of God, of Jesus, of the Gospel, is the ONLY true way.
But we need to be cautious about this, and not become too self-confident.
As Jesus followers, our confidence is in Jesus, not in our ideas about Jesus.
We are more than likely wrong about many things – yet GRACE is still our hope.
It is because of Jesus that we are saved, not because we’re right.
Its one thing to be ignorant (to not know), but its worse to be arrogant in it.
Like Job we must say, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand!” (Job 42:3)
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, its not just that I MAY be wrong in my beliefs, I’m sure I am. Thank You for the reminder that it is not my theology or beliefs that saves me, but Your grace and mercy… despite my flawed beliefs.

    Being taught.
Jesus’ disciples were being taught while they were with Him. Many things did not go with the flow of the beliefs of the day of the religious leaders.
    Hearing the Word.
    Seeing the Word in action.
    What’s happening?
    Following the Messiah.
Experiencing the great things He did and yet . . .
Is this the Messiah we had envisioned?
Is this the redeemer of the people – the promised One?
He will die and rise? Impossible!
Ears they have but do nor hear because
    – it doesn’t line up to our expectations
    – we march to our own beat of the drum
    – hard heartedness
    – blocked understanding
Not my way but His will be done. Help me daily to see Your will in my life. Walk and talk with God this day He had made.

Open the eyes of my heart Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
    I want to see You
    I want to see You

think about it!

The difference between involvement and commitment is like and eggs-and-ham breakfast: the chicken was involved – the pig was committed.
