THE STORY OF JESUS: Matthew 3:1-6
“People went out to him…” (Matthew 3:5)
This may seem like a strange verse to focus on.
But as someone involved in ministry, I am struck how “people went out to him…”
People came to repent, they came to address their spiritual concerns or questions.
They actually thought about these things, and sought guidance or help.
I don’t experience this; NO ONE comes to me regarding spiritual concerns.
“There is no one who seeks God.” (Romans 3:11)
Either people don’t think about these things, or I’m not the one they trust.
Is it me, is it how I do ministry, or is it that people just aren’t that interested.
Sure they come to church, but I rarely hear anything regarding the message.
They ask for money if in trouble, or for counseling if their lives are coming undone.
They talk about things they want at church, or don’t like at church.
My gut tells me there is a problem, partly me and partly others.
re. others, I suspect that we have become lukewarm, worldly, comfortable.
People maintain enough of God to give them peace, but nothing over the top.
re. myself, I suspect the above is true of me too.
But I also think the radicalness of John’s ministry and message convicts me too.
Jesus’ message is challenging, unsettling, uncomfortable, contrary to religianity!
Maybe I need to go into the ‘wilderness’ myself to find Jesus…
Maybe people will start coming out there to seek Him too…
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, something is wrong, at least in church as I experience it. We’re not seeking You in the wilderness, because we are at ease in the world – or working hard to get there! Teach us the meaning of repentance!
