the weak, the poor, the lowly

Posted on June 15, 2011June 13, 2011 by Norm

There are two readings for today.

SCRIPTURE: Psalm 113
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
The LORD is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens. Who is like the LORD our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? [Psalm 113:4-6]
To appreciate these words, we have to remember what a king in those times was normally like – they did not waste their time on the weak, the poor, the lowly.
But the psalmist rejoices in the fact that, unlike worldly rulers, God’s greatness is revealed in His willingness to reach down to the weak, the poor and the lowly.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people. He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. [Psalm 113:7-9]

At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. [Matthew 11:25-26]
Jesus echoes this sentiment, recognizing God as the Lord of heaven and earth who bypasses the so-called important ones (the wise and learned) and stoops down to bless and support the small ones (the children).
Although God rightfully deserves the highest honour and glory, and although He is “exalted over all the nations”, He does not act like a pompous overlord.
The God of Jesus Christ delights in the weak, the poor and the lowly.
Mary celebrates this as well when she hears the news that she is to be the mother of the Messiah.
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. [Luke 1:47-53]

This is what makes the psalmist sing for joy.
We too can celebrate this; but more than that, we need to imitate this.
The God we love and serve loves us as the weak, the poor and the lowly, and calls us to also love and serve the weak, the poor and the lowly.
I am secure because of God’s love for the lowly, I need to share this love with others.
In this way, I continue to help others experience and express the love of God, as they too celebrate God’s love for the weak, the poor and the lowly.

PRAYER:
Lord, with the psalmist and with Mary, I praise You as Lord of heaven and earth, for showing Your greatness through Your kindness to the weak, the poor and the lowly.

Thanks for your reminder of the greatness of our God, that he .cares for the downtrodden and the marginlised in society and calls on us to do the same

think about it!

If we only built up others, we would be part of God’s construction crew instead of members of Satan’s wrecking crew.
