Feb 16 — Joshua 12:1-24

OBSERVATION:
This is not very interesting reading, but it does have a purpose. It is a checklist for answered prayer (God help us), as well as for fulfilled promises (see Joshua 1:3-5). We also recall that for most of their journey into the land, it was hard, dangerous work (it was not just Canaanites who died in battle). Jericho was a reminder that God was their strength, but the other cities did not go down like Jericho. God has promised us ultimate vindication and victory, but we should not expect an easy journey. There is a huge cost to being a follower of God and Jesus, and Jesus was very clear on this. Through these lists we get a glimpse of both God’s work and ours. As Paul says in Philippians, “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose” (Philippians 2:12-13).

APPLICATION:
I cannot expect an easy time, whether here or elsewhere. God will work out His victory through me, but it will come with a price. Am I willing to pa the price of truly following Jesus where He leads. Even if He leads me in difficult places? One day I too will be able to record the list of fulfilled promises and answered prayers, but first I have to offer myself in faithful service, risk myself in risky obedience. I cannot walk on water unless I first step out of the boat.

PRAYER:
Lord, I have already seen evidence of fulfilled promises and answered prayer. I know that You are faithful, I know that my labour is not in vain. Give me courage and boldness to risk my comfort and security for You and Your mission. And help me to trust You. Amen.

think about it!

We shall never learn to know ourselves except by endeavoring to know God; for, beholding His greatness, we realize our own littleness; His purity shows us our foulness; and by meditating upon His humility we find how very far we are from being humble.

— Teresa of Avila
