SCRIPTURE: Acts 26:12-32
OBSERVATION/APPLICATION:
Here we see Paul’s evangelism skills in action. He speaks boldly yet graciously. He connects the coming of Jesus to the old covenant story of Israel. He highlights the need for eyes to be opened, repentance, turning from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to the power of God. He speaks of forgiveness and being transformed (sanctified, made holy) like Jesus. The proof of this is in their deeds (the fruit or evidence of life-transformation). All of this is made possible by Jesus death and resurrection. And all people, Jews and non-Jews, can receive it.
Change is possible. Victory over imperfection and death is possible. There is a better world possible. But it is only possible for those who repent, believe, receive and live like Jesus. Unfortunately, like Agrippa, it takes a lot to get people to see the need for this. People are often more impressed with their own power and position, so full of themselves. Where is our confidence? In our determination? In our legal system? In our investments? In our ingenuity? In our money? In our positions? In our accomplishments? In the free market economy? In the UN? In our military (OK, maybe not for Canadians)?
PRAYER:
Lord, if I am honest, my “hope” is still often in myself, in my abilities, in the decent life that I am able to enjoy and maintain here in Port Perry. Apparently we all need a 9/11 to remind us of how insecure and uncertain life is. Help me to renew my hope in You. Amen.
