THE STORY OF JESUS: Genesis 4:1-6:8
“The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.” (Genesis 6:6)
What a sad sentence.
God’s regret has to do with the position and power He entrusted to us.
All authority over creation was given to us, and we have turned into monsters.
God sees every rape, murder, injustice, abuse, and His heart is deeply troubled.
God still loves us but He hates what we have become, and what we are doing.
We wonder why He doesn’t just make us stop sinning and be good.
But that would mean taking back His entrusted authority, removing us from our important position.
In short, that would be the total end of humanity, and His original plan for creation.
To save us, He must maintain human responsibility, manage sin, and somehow restore humanity.
A human Saviour is needed, but the problem is every human heart is twisted and broken.
We need to appreciate how much pain and loss we have caused.
Too quickly we shake the fist at God because of what we blame Him for.
God’s heart is deeply troubled, and He is sorry for how things have turned out.
But He is not a quitter, and He will not give up on me, on us, on the world.
God laments the mess our world is in, but He is also doing something about it.
God sees the mess in my life too, and though it deeply troubles Him, He still loves me.
Through Jesus, He is doing what needs to be done to restore me, and make things better.
What do you sense the Lord saying to you?
PRAYER
Lord, forgive us for blaming God for the mess of our world. Thank You for being a Good Adam, and for reversing this downward path to hell. Thank You for the hope that things will get better!
